We all get by with a little help from our friends
Their day at the Brownstone had gone fairly well. There was a lot of pain and plenty of tears were shed, but at the end of it all, Addison and Derek had managed to find each other again. They were starting over, beginning a new life. It wasn't so much a clean slate because their past was always going to be there, but they were finally getting past it and letting go, moving on with their lives so they could be happy the way they should be.

After they'd spent the rest of their afternoon together shopping and doing other "things," they decided to give their friends and family a call, knowing that they'd never be able to live it down if someone found out that they were back in New York and didn't bother to tell anyone. Addison had called Savvy and Weiss first before calling Derek's mom. The plan soon became having dinner with Savvy and Weiss that evening and lunch with Mama Shepherd the next day.

Now they were at their friends' house. Derek was out in the living room with Weiss while Addison stayed in the kitchen to help Savvy.

Derek had lifted his beer to his lips immediately after Addison had made her speech about how the men owed them children. It had been some sort of an avoidance tactic because he honestly wasn't sure how to respond.

Sure, they'd talked about children. They'd talked about them in the past, and Addison had never been ready. Unlike many relationships, it had always been Derek pushing for a family. He'd been raised in a rather good sized family with an emphasis on children. But Addison had pushed it away. And Derek had resigned himself to that.

It seemed somewhat odd for them to be having the children discussion now. They had just gotten back to their old selves. Their relationship was still somewhat rocky, despite how much faith he had in their future. A child now seemed as if it would be completely overbearing.

As he glanced between Savvy and Weiss, who were obviously on pins and needles, Addison elbowed him in the ribs. He'd been married to her long enough to realize that was his cue to interject and help her out. But he wasn't sure how to . He wasn't sure what she wanted.

Glancing between Savvy and Weiss again before looking back at her, Derek shrugged and attempted to settle on the one part of the conversation he could relate with, "I'm pretty sure sex with us gives you ladies some real satisfaction."

"Exactly," Weiss nodded emphatically, looking over at Derek before turning his gaze over to the TV and drinking his beer. "I don't get why you need all of that other stuff."

He surely understood Savvy's desire to have children. He wanted to have children too, but he wasn't ready to do it the only way they were able to. Having a baby with his wife was still his dream, and despite all logic and rationale, he didn't want to let that dream go yet.

Instead of telling Savvy or expressing it to anyone for that matter, Weiss kept it all to himself. It was easier this way, he thought. This way, there wasn't anything to deal with and nothing to talk about. He wouldn't have to really confront any of these feelings, and it'd then work out for the best.

The fact that they were in the company of others mattered little to Savvy as Weiss spoke those words. She gaped at him, completely at a loss for how to respond to his statement. He was honestly implying that satisfying sex could compensate for any one of the desires Addison had listed.

It was shocking that a couple that had been married as log as they had could be on such different pages in their desires. Weiss had wanted children at one time. In fact, Weiss's biggest (only) objection to Savvy having her surgery had been his desire to have children. But, somehow, that desire had flown out the window when she'd gone to her friend for that one favor.

And, if Weiss didn't want children with her, Savvy just didn't know how it could work. She wanted children. Motherhood was the calling as far as Savvy was concerned. But her husband obviously didn't feel the same way. This dream was going to be denied to her, and he had no interest in working on it, no interest in facing it.

"Because we could have just become lesbians if we didn't want the extra stuff," She finally answered, probably much more harshly than she would have normally allowed when they had company, but she was stuck in her irritation at her husband.

Addison didn't miss the harshness in Savvy's voice, nor did she miss Weiss's wince when Savvy finished speaking. This was turning out much worse than she was hoping. Derek wasn't any help, and he didn't really have much of a reaction when she mentioned children. Savvy and Weiss were just a mess. She wasn't sure what to do or how to help.

Working herself out of Derek's arms, she crossed the room to Savvy, sitting on the arm of her chair and wrapping an arm around Savvy's shoulder comfortingly. "Maybe we should wonder why you need all of that sex," Addison said, looking to Derek and Weiss, "It's certainly not a necessity like the things we ask for."

Derek watched in surprise as Savvy made a harsh retort to her husband, prompting Addison to slip out of his arms and walk to her friend. If it hadn't been apparent before, it was quite obvious now that there was something going on that Derek wasn't privvy to. He certainly wished he had been clued in on whatever it was because it seemed as if he was getting some of the wrath from the angry women.

He sighed, draining the last of his beer before commenting in the most jovial tone he could manage, "Because we have sexy wives who make us insatiable?"

Weiss stared at the bottle of beer in his hand, avoiding Savvy's gaze. He knew she wasn't happy with him at the moment, and that disappointed him a little. He wanted to be able to make her happy, but right now, if children is what she wanted, he wouldn't be able to do that. Maybe tomorrow or the next day, but in this moment, he still wasn't ready.

They hadn't discussed starting a family in quite a while. He'd only been focusing on Savvy, making sure her hormones weren't bothering her or any emotional stress. Adoption was last on his mind, and today, she was suddenly pushing the subject onto him. They needed time to discuss this so that he could get completely on board with this idea.

"That's definitely it," Weiss agreed, nodding his head and doing as Derek did, finishing the rest of his beer.

Savvy glanced to Addison, giving her a look that she hoped conveyed her dejected appreciation. Addison's efforts to help speed the proces with Weiss along had been most appreciated, but, in the end, her husband just wasn't ready. And that just made everything much more difficult.

She gave her friend a comforting pat on the leg and shrugged before looking back to Weiss. For now, it was a lost cause, and she couldn't stand to bring Derek (who couldn't have looked more clueless if he'd tried) and Addison into her own problems.

"It's good to know where your priorities lie," Savvy finally responded, hoping her voice held a confident air of finality she was afraid it lacked.

Though she saw the appreciation in Savvy's eyes, Addison couldn't help but feel slightly guilty. If it hadn't been for her bringing up children, Savvy and Weiss would have gotten to that topic when they were ready, and none of this arguing (if one could call it that) would be happening.

She gave Savvy's shoulder a squeeze, "Just ignore them, Sav. All of this TV watching has diminished they're brains. We can't expect them to be as intelligent as we are."

Savvy smiled up at Addison, grateful to have someone with her who was more than willing to sympathize and comfort. She only hoped Derek and Addison would find greater happiness with the baby issue than she and Weiss seemed to be able to.

Maybe, if things worked out for Derek and Addison, Weiss might see the light and realize what they needed. They didn't have many "couple" friends, and the ones they had were usually just products of the men hanging around because Savvy was a friend to their wives. Weiss didn't respect many of them, nor would he have ever divulged information to. But she couldn't help but hope that if Weiss saw Derek happy he might search for that happiness in himself. After all, Addison and Savvy had often remarked about exactly how similar their husbands were.

"It just amazes me we managed to become so cultured and refined while our husbands are barely above neandertal," Savvy agreed, managing a somewhat genuine grin.
xaddis0nx on June 17th, 2007 03:53 am (UTC)
"And by cultured and refined you must mean obsessive compulsive about owning every pair of Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Choos," Weiss quipped teasingly, nudging Derek in the arm with his elbow and glancing over at him to see that he agreed.

It was much easier to be making jokes than to actually be discussing things. They would have the discussion eventually, but he wasn't ready to do it now, and he certainly wasn't going to do it in front of Derek and Addison. Their friends deserved a little more hospitality than that, especially when he didn't know just how the conversation about adopting was going to go. He wasn't about to get into an argument with his wife while their friends were there.

Derek smirked, letting out an obligatory chuckle at Weiss's jab about the women's shopping habits. Honestly, his mind wasn't really on the topic at hand; he was much more focused on the exchange he was witnessing between his wife and two friends.

He hadn't missed the obvious tension between Savvy and Weiss, and he hadn't missed the expectant way Addison had approached the whole conversation. She'd obviously expected much more of a reaction from himself, and she'd expected things to unravel differently between the other couple. This much Derek could surmise.

However, he honestly couldn't even figure out what the tension was over. His best bet was that it had something to do with Addison mentioning children and othr 'priorities,' but he couldn't really assume that.

"Give them some credit, Weiss," Derek responded after a few moments, keeping his voice as light and unconfused as he could manage, "They have an equally impressive collection of purses to match those godforsaken shoes."
xaddis0nx on June 18th, 2007 05:55 pm (UTC)
Addison rolled her eyes and shook her head, giving Savvy's arm a reassuring squeeze. "Well, if it weren't for us, you two would probably be wearing rags or things that were in fashion ten years ago," she countered with a smirk.

It was obvious that the discussion about children just wasn't working out. Neither couple were making any progress, and it didn't seem to bode well anyway. For now, she supposed they could put it aside and focus on something else.

She really wanted things to work out for Savvy, however. Her friend had also been through a lot in the past year, and she deserved to be happy just as much as Addison did. They both deserved to be mothers and to have the family they've always wanted. She knew that soon, they would.

Derek nodded in smug agreement, "Well, I certainly can't take the blame for what I wear. I'd be a... flannel wearing wood chopping fisherman if it weren't for you, right?"

He gave Weiss a quick glance, but his focus was mainly on Addison. It was quite apparent this conversation hadn't gone where she was hoping it would, but he still hadn't quite figured out what she wanted the conversation to come of. The conversation had changed tones for the moment, but Derek had no illusions that it wouldn't come back to him later.
