Derek Shepherd's head hurt. The ailment might have been a product of his ex-best friend's arrival in Seattle. Or it might have been because he'd spent much of the day concerned for Meredith's well-being and realizing that Finn Dandridge (the freaking vet) was truly the better guy for her. It could have had something to do with his wife's (soon to be ex) warning to not hurt Meredith. A warning that had affected Derek more than he thought was possible; a warning that made him feel that Addison was actually disappointed in him.

Or Derek's head simply could have been hurting because of the ridiculous amount of scotch he was currently consuming. He hadn't gone so far as instructing Joe to leave the bottle, but he vaguely recalled losing count at three glasses (doubles).

Whether or not it was the cause for the pain in his head, Derek was undeniably drunk. Debilitating-hangover-in-the-morning, make-really-stupid-decisions drunk. In college (and the few times he'd done this in high school) drunk dialing had been his favorite drunk pasttime.

And though it would certainly fall under the "really stupid decisions" category, making a phone call seemed like a really good idea. So, he fumbled around with the clip on his belt until he procured the phone.

With deliberate motions, squinting to concentrate on the words, Derek got to the contacts portion of his phone and pressed talk on the first entry.

Addison was still at Finn's place (apparently he was planning for her to stay the night) after taking a nice bath when her phone rang. She left the bedroom, dressed only in a cotton towel, and went into the living room to get her cell. She stared at the screen for several moments, trying to figure out why he was calling her before she flipped the phone open.

"Derek?" she asked a little bit concerned. The only reasons she could come up with for Derek calling her were something in regards to their meeting with the lawyer to finalize the divorce or if something was seriously wrong.

As the phone rang, Derek finished the glass that was in front of him. His attention wasn't really on the phone but more concerned with the empty glass in front of him. So, he'd forgotten who he was calling and was more than a little surprised to hear the familiar voice on the other end.

"Addie!" Derek said in shock, desperately trying to remember why he was calling his wife.

"Derek, what's the matter?" Addison asked, confused by his tone and voice. She still had no idea what he wanted, and by the way he said her name, she figured he wasn't quite sure either.

She tightened the towel around herself and waited for his answer.

Derek sloppily motioned to Joe to refill his drink as Addison wondered why he was calling. He paused, remembering that he'd thought it was a good idea to call someone. He couldn't necessarily explain why he was calling his wife, though.

"I," He started and then paused, working to get the words out in a deliberate and coherent fashion, "I wanted... to talk."

"You wanted to talk," Addison repeated, narrowing her eyes at nothing in particular. She worked into the shirt that Finn had just brought out for her and sat down on chair.

Derek was being awfully strange and he sounded different. She had no idea what he wanted to talk about. They weren't exactly on the best of terms considering the adulterous love child comment, although she had told him not to hurt Meredith later in the day. She wondered if it was about that.

"So...what exactly do you want to talk about?"

Derek watched as Joe poured him another double and sighed. He was certain, if he were sober, he would have something to talk about. It was Addison for christ's sake.

He lifted the glass to his lips, quite a task since his dominant hand was holding his phone. He took a drink before speaking deliberately once again, "I broke up with Meredith."
xaddis0nx on December 6th, 2006 01:16 am (UTC)
Addison heard him drinking something over the telephone and then the glass making contact with the table, hustling and bustling of people in the background. She was about to ask him if he was drunk when what he said finally sunk in.

Finn had already told her earlier when they were still outside the hospital. She wasn't sure why Derek had called to tell her this. Was he looking for comfort or someone to mess around with? Addison didn't know and she didn't know what to say to him.

"You broke up with Meredith," she finally repeated after going over a few possible things she could say.

Was she repeating him? Or was she telling him? Derek tried desperately to remember. He was pretty sure he had told her.

"I broke up with Meredith," Derek nodded even though she couldn't see him. He waited for her to make a response as he lifted the lass to his lips again, almost dropping it in the process.

Addison sighed. "Derek, how much have you been drinking?" she asked, leaning her elbows onto the table.

It still hurt her to think that he was feeling miserable, even after everything that had happened. Eleven years doesn't go away, and the pain of losing him hasn't gone away either. Now he was...she wasn't sure what he was. Derek finally had the chance to be with Meredith and he broke up with her. It didn't make any sense.

Derek looked down at the glass, trying to remember. Numbers meant nothing because he'd lost count a while before. And, truthfully, it didn't matter. Enough had happened during the day. Forgetting was important.

"I dunno," He answered honestly, "Not enough."

She could feel a part of her wanting to go and be with him, to make him feel better if she could. Of course, she knew that that wasn't possible seeing as how Derek was in love with Meredith Grey and not her. This still felt weird, knowing that it wasn't long before she'd officially stop being a Shepherd, stop being Derek's wife, and really, she wouldn't have any reason to be comforting Derek or do anything for Derek. Everything she'd known for eleven years, just gone.

She tried to blink back the tears that'd formed in her eyes, hoping that Finn wouldn't look her way and find her on the brink of crying.

"Derek, stop drinking, call a cab, and go home," Addison said, her voice conveying her concern for him. It was going to be a long time (if not forever) before she would be able to stop these feelings.

Derek tossed back the rest of the scotch as Addison was instructing him not to.

He sighed. She was right, of course. That was what he should be doing. Even in his inebriated state he knew that, but he couldn't. All he really knew was that he needed to forget. Forget that Meredith was with the vet, forget that he was going to have to deal with Mark for some time now... forget the disappointment in Addison's eyes.

"Come drink with me." He paused so he could motion to Joe again, "Toast me being an asshole."
xaddis0nx on December 6th, 2006 03:29 am (UTC)
"Derek, stop it," she said assertively. Addison looked around the room nervously as she contemplated going to get him home (She was his wife for eleven years after all. It was mere instinct). She knew he wasn't going to go back to the trailer on his own anytime soon.

Finn went and sat down beside her, comforting her, which only confused her more. Finn was a nice guy, and Addison really didn't want to hurt him, but Derek was everything she'd known for the last third of her life. She couldn't let him do this to himself.
dr_shep on December 6th, 2006 03:35 am (UTC)
Why did she have to be so freaking insistent? Derek was drinking, and it was only right that his wife come drink with him. He gave Joe an appreciative nod (although it nearly threw him off balance) when the bartender came to refill the glass.

"Get wasted with me, Addie. Like Med School. Hate me in the morning."
xaddis0nx on December 6th, 2006 03:57 am (UTC)
"Derek," she said softly as she looked at Finn sadly in the eyes. "I'm coming to get you. Don't...do anything, okay?"

Addison sighed. She didn't want to hurt anybody, but she knew she was hurting Finn right now. She had to because Derek needed her right now, and although he'd abandoned her before, she wasn't going to do that to him despite the fact that they were getting divorced.
dr_shep on December 6th, 2006 04:11 am (UTC)
"You're coming?" He wondered hopefully.

If he were more sober, Derek would have probably been a little bit afraid. Addison, especially whe he interupted her, had never been particularly forgiving if he drank himself into a stupor. But he was beyond all logical thoght. He was just glad Addie was coming.
xaddis0nx on December 6th, 2006 04:24 am (UTC)
"Yeah, I'll be there soon," Addison answered quietly and closed her phone, turning back to Finn.
dr_shep on December 6th, 2006 04:35 am (UTC)
Derek nodded, realizing that she had hung up the phone he dropped it to the counter and ended the call. There was no way he had the coordination to replace it on his belt loop so he left it there. Now he could concentrate on the scotch in front of him, at least until Addie came.
