Emerald City Bar
The bell above the door rang as Addison quickly entered, trying to get out of the rain. She quickly scanned the bar for the one person she came there for.

She wasn't even sure why she was doing this. Well, she did know. She was doing this for Derek, but really, she shouldn't be. Right? Addison wasn't his wife anymore (at least she wouldn't be his wife anymore a couple days from now when they go to meet with the lawyer). She didn't have any claim to him. She didn't have any responsibility towards him, and yet here she was.

Addison loved him still and she would go through hell and back for him (she kind of already had). She hoped that deep down somewhere, he was still her Derek and that they could possibly work their way to being friends again. When their marriage fell apart, Addison had lost her best friend and her husband. Now, she only wanted to be able to hold onto one of them.

Her eyes finally fell on Derek who was sitting at the counter, nursing another glass of alcohol. She frowned as she went over to his side. "Derek?" she said softly, feeling all the eyes from people who work at the hospital on them. Derek just had to pick the one bar everyone from the hospital went to.

Addison narrowed her eyes at him and let out a sigh. "Well apparently you've succeeded at that, so it's time you go home, Derek," she said assertively.

Grabbing onto his arm, she tried to get him to stand up.

Derek shrugged his shoulder, attempting to remove her hand, "Let me finish my drink, Addison."

The idea of Addison coming to get him had been a really good one in Derek's mind. At least until she had decided to seperate him from his glass and attempted to move him from the bar.

She tightened her grip on his arm and continued to pull him away from the counter and his drink. "No, Derek. I think you've had enough for tonight."

Addison still didn't know the reason for his drunken stupor, and she knew she probably wouldn't be getting that answer tonight, not when he's in this state. She knew she just needed to get him home and away from all this alcohol before he did something stupid.

Pulling on him harder, she finally succeeded in getting him off of the stool. "C'mon Derek, let's get you home," she said softly. Everyone's eyes were still on them, but at this point she just didn't care.

Derek stumbled as Addison forcefully pulled him from the stool and he grabbed onto her to steady himself. He straightened himself up slowly, holding onto her arm to keep himself steady.

"Jeez," He glared at her, "Aren't you supposed to be throwing Mark around like that?"
xaddis0nx on December 11th, 2006 05:49 am (UTC)
Addison froze when Derek mentioned Mark. He wasn't even supposed to be here. She shouldn't have called him in the first place, but he wasn't supposed to stay. It was a drunken mistake and now she was paying for it. She wondered if Derek would feel this way later.

"I'm not with Mark and I'll never be with Mark," she said assertively with a certain air of seriousness. Addison could have said the same for him; why was he here instead of Meredith, but she wasn't one to say something like that. She wasn't the drunken idiot tonight.

Even in his drunken state, Derek could see that Addison meant what she was saying. It was even remotely comforting. As horrible as it was, he wanted Addison to be alone. He'd been with her for 12 years and still felt some sort of claim on her. If she wasn't with him, she shouldn't be with anyone.

He nodded, still holding onto her as they made their way through the bar, "See, you should drink with me. Being single is easier drunk."
xaddis0nx on December 11th, 2006 06:25 am (UTC)
Addison had to laugh softly at his statement. She wished being single after eleven years of marriage was made easier in some way, but she knew that it wasn't. Being drunk certainly hadn't helped her; it only worsened her problems, or at least added more to them.

"Getting drunk doesn't solve anything, Derek," she said as they made their way to her car. Both of them were getting wet even with the umbrella since Addison was trying so hard to keep him upright while holding it and his arm simultaneously.

Derek shook his head emphatically, throwing himself off-balance in the act and grabbing onto Addison more than he already was to keep himself upright.

He had to disagree. Being drunk was solving a lot of things. He'd almost forgotten about Mark and Meredith and the vet, and he almost didn't remember how much Addison's disappointment had hurt him. Besides, when he was sober, Addison hadn't been at his side (and it felt more right than he cared to admit).

"Yes it does." He argued.

"It may seem like that right now," Addison said, opening the passenger side door, "And it may seem like your problems are all gone, but you'll soon find out that you'll wake up to them and possibly more."

Addison looked at him sadly as she got him situated in the car, buckling his seatbelt before closing the door and making her way quickly to the other side and sliding in herself. She put the key into the ignition and turned on the heater, glancing over at Derek before she started backing out of the parking spot.

She was still clueless as to why Derek was so keen on being drunk. Looking at him again in his drunken state, she knew that if she asked, his answers would be beyond truthful. She stayed silent for a moment, contemplating on whether she should be that devious. It wasn't her place to know anymore, but she asked anyway.

"So why exactly...are you single?"

Derek slumped in the seat, his head resting back against the fabric as Addison reached around him and buckled the seat belt. He looked over at her as she guided the car, needing a stationary object to focus on (and enjoying the sight of Addison quite a bit.

It took Derek a few moments to register what she was asking and a few more to formulate a response.

"You told me not to hurt her, and I disappointed you. I couldn't do that again."

Addison felt her eyes glazing over with tears and she reached up to wipe them away so her vision was clear enough to drive. Why exactly she was being so emotional, she wasn't too sure. Maybe it was the fact that he'd done something for her, or that she knew she shouldn't be taking him home because that home couldn't be considered hers anymore.

Sighing, she kept her eyes on the road. She could have asked why, suddenly, was he making decisions on account of her, but she decided against it, knowing that it wasn't a topic they should broach while she was driving.

She stayed quiet for a moment longer before asking, "What if--What if you hurt her when you broke up with her, Derek." She paused to think of what she needed to say next. "You love her...you shouldn't just give that up," she said softly.

Three or four glasses of scotch earlier, Derek would never have answered this question and certainly not honestly, but he was drunk. So, when he answered he didn't hold back or censor his speech, or even consider doing so.

"No one ever had to tell me not to hurt you." He told her the first thought that had come into his mind after she'd walked away in the hospital earlier in the day.
xaddis0nx on December 11th, 2006 07:53 am (UTC)
The car stopped at a traffic light and Addison pursed her lips together before turning to look at Derek. He was so vulnerable in this drunken state. She didn't want to know anymore. She couldn't risk falling back into her state of longing for Derek (although she wasn't completely out if it either).

She sighed, turning back to the road as the light turned green and muttered, "And that's why we both hurt each other."
dr_shep on December 11th, 2006 08:04 am (UTC)
Addison's response was too quiet for Derek to hear exactly what she said, so he shrugged it off. As the car took to driving again, Derek still looking at Addison.

He'd gone to Joe's to drink and forget, and, for the most part, he was successful. He'd forgotten that Mark (his best friend turned arch-nemesis) was in Seattle, and he'd forgotten that Meredith was spending her time with the vet. But Addison's presence hadn't allowed him to forget everything. He couldn't forget how she had looked so disappointed in him when she'd talked to him. He couldn't forget the pained looks that always seemed to be sitting at the back of her eyes.

Finally, Derek decided to break the silence.

"It took me 11 years to hurt you. When did I start disappointing you?"
xaddis0nx on December 11th, 2006 08:15 am (UTC)
Addison looked over at Derek and studied him for a moment. She wondered if this could be like her earlier conversation with Meredith. Maybe she could tell him everything, knowing that he probably wouldn't remember most of it in the morning.

Letting out a sigh, she focused on the road as she spoke.

"I don't...know exactly when it started," she said softly. "It kind of just gradually happened. You started working more. I started seeing you less, and eventually we barely saw each other at all."

She swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat, recalling the countless nights she sat in their brownstone, waiting for him to come home to eat dinner, and the nights his side of the bed was cold and empty and she felt all alone. She knew she should have seen the end coming then, but she had convinced herself over and over that they would eventually be okay. Now, the end really had come, and she was more disappointed than ever.
